GIRLS' DORMITORY

The girls’ dorm at Mizigo was funded through generous donations to KidsUganda and can house up to 200 girls. On February 21st, 2009, 60 girls, ages 4-17, moved into their new home. The day started at about 9 a.m. with all the boys and girls at Mizigo working together to move furniture from the old dormitory to the new dormitory, while being supervised by staff and teachers. On their own the girls helped each other carry their personal belongings such as mattresses, mosquito nets, clothes, and foot lockers into the dormitory.

Finally, Eva Walusimbi gave the girls a tour of the premises. She also taught them how to use the toilets and the showers - for all of the girls this was their first time using a shower! According to Rev. Walusimbi, “bathing by showering ... is their most hilarious experience. They wake us up every morning at five, shouting as the cold showers touch their bodies in the shower rooms just before they start their day.”

Below is a video showing scenes from the construction of the girls' dormitory.

There’s Never a Lost Opportunity

The giant roof on the dorm provided the ideal chance to harvest clean water for the health and hygiene of the entire Mizigo school. A 16,000-gallon water tank was constructed adjacent to the dorm building.
