KidsUganda Accomplishments
Shelter
- 2009 - Completed the Girls Dorm at Mizigo and increased the number of girls housed from 40 to 120.
- 2009 - In partnership with Solar Light for Africa, installed solar panels on Girls Dorm.
- 2010 - Acquired land for Boys Dorm and church relocation.
- 2011 Planned – Build Boys Dorm.
Health & Hygiene
- 2008 - Provided oral hygiene training.
- 2008 - Constructed a latrine at Kigalama.
- 2009 - In partnership with Water for Our World, constructed a well at Kigalama and rebuilt the well at Nkonya.
- 2009 - In partnership with Johnson Diversey, provided clean hands training at Kigalama and Nkonya.
- 2010 - Built a new kitchen for Mizigo with fuel-efficient stoves that will consume 60% less firewood.
Educational Support
- 2007 - Partnership with Lake Forest – Lake Bluff Rotary and the Shoemakers, built a vocational school at Mizigo.
- 2008 - Installed telephone poles to provide Internet access.
- 2009 - Launched the Child Sponsorship program to cover expenses for food, staff salaries, school supplies, uniforms, transportation and medical care. 68 children sponsored by end of year.
- 2009 – Provided funding to hire a degreed front desk officer to assist with the Child Sponsorship program.
- 2009 - Provided support to Andy Stewart's construction of a classroom block at Nkonya.
- 2009 - Completed the computer lab at Mizigo Vocational School with 12-networked laptops and hired a computer instructor.
- 2010 - Child Sponsorship program grows to 81 sponsored children with a 93% renewal rate.
- 2010 – Provided $5,000 per month in operational support.
- 2010 – Delivered additional laptop computers to equip a computer lab for the Mizigo Primary School.
- 2010 – Solar Light for Africa installed solar panels at the Nkonya School.
- 2011 Planned – Provide support to Andy Stewart's construction of Nkonya staff housing.
- 2011 Planned – Launch Smith Scholar's program to provide educational and wellness support for 100 children.
Agricultural Sustainability Support
- 2007 - Constructed a coop for chickens and with assistance from Lake Bluff School children, purchased 1,000 egg-laying hens to produce eggs for the children to eat and for sale.
- 2008 - Funded clearing and planting of 7 acres at Busere Farm to grow cabbages for school meal program.
- 2009 - Provided funding to hire a degreed farm manager.
- 2008 and 2009 - sponsored one MBA student each year as an intern to develop plans for agricultural sustainability and manage other projects.
- 2009 - Expanded the existing chicken coop to accommodate three flocks and purchased a replacement flock of 1,000 laying hens.
- 2010 – Added a second flock of laying hens. As of Fall 2010 the egg laying operation is providing eggs to the school and generating a profit.
- 2010 – Purchased truck to transport eggs to market.
- 2011 Planned – Sponsor a MBA student.
